Therapeutic Home Gardening for Solitary Elders

01 Background

Psychological Isolation Experienced by Elderly Individuals Living Alone in Apartments in South Korea

By 2025, South Korea is expected to be an ultra-aged society, with over 25% of its population being 65 or older. A significant concern is the mental well-being of solitary elderly individuals, with loneliness and depression on the rise due to changing family structures and demographics.

02 Opportunity

We got clues from a paper, and desk research.

Psychological Soothing Effects of Nature in the Rural Environment

Paper Research revealed that in developed countries, rural elderly populations exhibit lower levels of depression compared to their urban counterparts.⁽ ¹ ⁾ This research presented an opportunity to explore how attributes of rural living could be applied to alleviate depression among elderly individuals living alone in urban areas.
